Ranching is another thing that is important in any Harvest Moon game. At the beginning of the game you will not have a barn or a coop on your plot of land and you will not have access to Brownie ranch. To get to Brownie Ranch you will need to use a hammer to smash the boulder blocking the path using a hammer with 3 levels of skill or wait until the 28th of Spring when the boulder will go away by itself. You will need to pay a visit to the carpenter in order to arrange for a barn or a coop to be built on your plot.

Build/Upgrade A Coop/Barn

Building A Coop/Barn

Building a barn or coop can be quite pricey but it will be worth it when you have several animals all producing produce for you to sell. To a build a barn you will need 12 lumber pieces, 12 stone pieces, and 3000G. To build a coop you will need 10 lumber pieces, 10 stone pieces and 2400G. You can acquire the lumber by chopping up twigs, stumps and trees. You can acquire stone pieces by smashing up boulders. When you have what you need to start building a barn or a coop talk to the clerk at the Carpenter's shop. Once you've chosen what you would like to have built then you will be asked where on your plot you want it placed. Choose wisely.

Upgrading A Coop/Barn

You can't build another barn or coop but you can upgrade the one you already have. Upgrading the barn requires 22 lumber pieces, 22 stone pieces, and 6000G. Upgrading the coop requires 22 lumber pieces, 22 stone pieces, and 4800G. Upgrading only increases your barn/coop capacity a little. Your barn will hold 6 of any animal but when you upgrade it it will hold 8 of any animal. Your coop will hold 8 chickens or ducks (or a mixture of both) and 6 silkworms but when you upgrade it will hold 12 chickens or ducks and 8 silkworms.

The Animals

All of the animals are bought at Brownie Ranch. In addition to the traditional animals are some new animals never seen before in previous Harvest Moon games. All of the animals are listed below with a little information about them.

Horse

Horses can be bought for 6300G and will live in the barn. A horse you have bought from Brownie Ranch will mature into an adult horse withing 28 days. Horses can be bred by using a Miracle Potion. When a horse becomes pregnant it will be 14 days before it is born and then it will take 14 days to mature. Horses are now white, black or brown in color instead of being restricted to one color as in previous Harvest Moon games. The life span of a horse is about 4 years. You will need to purchase a saddle from Brownie ranch before you can ride a horse.

Ostrich

Ostriches are one of the few new animals in Tree Of Tranquility. Ostriches can be bought for 13500G and will live in the barn. An ostrich chick you have bought from Brownie Ranch will mature into an adult ostrich withing 24 days. Ostriches can be bred by placing an ostrich egg in the ostrich egg incubator. When the ostrich egg has been place into the incubator it will take 14 days to hatch and then it will take 24 days to mature. Ostriches are dark blue in color. The life span of an ostrich is about 4 years. You will need to purchase a saddle from Brownie ranch before you can ride an ostrich. Ostriches produce ostrich eggs every 4 days.

Chicken

Chickens can be bought for 2100G and will live in the coop. A chicken you have bought from Brownie Ranch will not mature as it is already an adult. Chickens can be bred by placing a chicken egg in the incubator. When the chicken egg has been placed in the incubator it will take 7 days to hatch and then it will mature in another 7 days. Chickens are white in color. The life span of a chicken is about 3 years. Chickens produce eggs daily.

Duck

Duck can be bought for 2400G and will live in the coop. A duck you have bought from Brownie Ranch will not mature as it is already an adult. Ducks can be bred by placing a duck egg in the incubator. When the duck egg has been placed in the incubator it will take 7 days to hatch and then another 7 days before it matures. Ducks are white, green or brown in color. The life span of a duck is about 3 years. Ducks produce eggs every 2 days.

Cow

Cows can be bought for 4500G and will live in the barn. A cow you have bought from Brownie Ranch will mature into an adult cow within 28 days. Cows can be bred by using a Miracle Potion. When a cow becomes pregnant it will be 14 days before it is born and then it will take 28 days to mature. Cows are black, brown, and white and black in color. The life span of a cow is about 3 years. Cows produce milk daily.

Sheep

Sheep can be bought for 4200G and will live in the barn. A sheep you have bought from Brownie Ranch will mature into an adult sheep withing 28 days. Sheep can be bred by using a Miracle Potion. When a sheep becomes pregnant it will be7 days before it is born and then it will take 14 days to mature. Sheep are white or black in color. The life span of a sheep is about 3 years. Sheep produce wool every 4 days.

Goat

Goats can be bought for 3600G and it will live in the barn. A goat you have bought from Brownie Ranch will mature into an adult goat withing 14 days. Goats can be bred by using a Miracle Potion. When the goat becomes pregnant it will be 7 days before it is born and then it will take 14 days to mature. Goats are white or black in color. The life span of a goat is about 3 years. Goats produce goat milk daily.

Silkworm

Silkworms can be bought for 2850G and will live in the coop. A silkworm you have bought from Brownie Ranch will not mature into as it already is. Silkworms cannot be bred. Silkworms are white in color. The life span of a silkworm is about 1.5 years. Silkworms produce silk every 4 days.
