You can buy grains (wheat, rice) in the second year. It takes around two seasons for them to grow, so try planting them in early spring. Rice is grown a little differently. You must dig from the waters edge. Dig a 3 x 3 square that is filled with water. Here you can plant the grain.

Grass can be planted every season of the year except for Winter. Once it's grown you can slice it down with your sickle. Doing this makes fodder for your animals to eat.
