In order to grow crops you must clear some land. You should clear your land so it looks something like this:

Turnips

Potatoes
Buy for: 150G
Sell for: 80G
Crop Type: Single
Days to Grow: 7 days

Summer Crops

Corn
Buy for: 300G
Sell for: 150G
Crop Type: Renewable
Days to Grow: 13 days

Tomatoes
Buy for: 200G
Sell for: 120G
Crop Type: Renewable
Days to Grow: 9 days

Fall Crops

Eggplant
Buy for: 150G
Sell for: 60G
Crop Type: Single
Days to Grow: 5 days

Peanuts
Buy for: 200G
Sell for: 80G
Crop Type: Single
Days to Grow: 7 days

Winter Crops

Broccoli
Buy for: 500G
Sell for: 150G
Crop Type: Renewable

Carrots

Grass

You can plant grass in any season (except for Winter) and it always grows back. Grass takes around 9 days to become fully grown. After you cut it down with your scythe, it will take less than a week to grow back. The whole point of grass is to cut it with your scythe. It makes food for your animals and is stored in the silo.
